's the real reality of what's happening out there. >> you hear mitt romney pivoting talking about the real unemployment rate at 11%, so i -- i guess that's his pivot coming off the unemployment rate yesterday. randi, why does all this matter? as you mentioned off the top, the economy by far the number one issue with americans. take a look at this, from our cnn/orc international poll. we did it about a week ago before the first debate but i don't think it will change people's perceptions. by far the economy remains the top issue on the minds of americans. it's been that way since late 2007 when the u.s. economy went into a recession, and how do americans feel about which candidate is doing a better job on the economy right now? they were split going into the first debate. we'll take a look at polling coming out that was conducted after the first debate. again, right there, can you see that number. that 48%, that really says it all. the economy is the most important issue on the minds of american voters, and what's the most important economic issue, jobs, randi? >> which is why there is so m

they needed to do something. the first thing you're talking about with mitt romney and foreign policy had been this trip to europe, europe, poland, israel, the olympics hadn't gone so well. now they have something to talk about. how did it go? i think the main difference and what they strive to do is paint a contrast between them and the obama administration. the contrast becomes part of their posturing. how are we going to approach foreign policy differently? the posture is that obama's foreign policy is lead from behind, i think mitt romney is really lean forward. we're trying to use our influence in the middle east to -- but really we're trying to use our influence in the region to get the outcomes we want in order to shape the policies that we want, in order to receive the outcomes that we want in the middle east. >> let's be honest, posturing is what we've got here. was his speech heavy on detail or light on detail? >> i'm stealing this from someone on twitter who said the difference between romney and obama on foreign policy is romney says speak louder but carry the same stick. sort of t

. this is not the recovery we all wanted but we're on the road. for mitt romney it does take away one of talking points he has been very big on, number of consecutive months that the number has been at 8% or above, that line is gone from his speech. short term positives are there for president obama but long term you look at the historical numbers in terms of unemployment in presidential reelection years and depth of the political challenges are great here. >> heather: i'll ask you more about historically in a moment but the numbers have been called into question. there is actually a huge disconnect between the modest of new jobs report and significant decrease in the unemployment rate. jack welch, he went to as far to suggest that the numbers may be manipulated by the obama administration. do you think that the numbers add up? >> i think the suggestion that the numbers was cooked is relatively ridiculous. that being said. economists at the labor department will admit freely that there is a lot of margin of error in these numbers. a month after each job report these numbers are revised upward or downward.

, what's the thinking on governor romney's bounce in the polls since that first big debate? >> they are very pumped here. the romney campaign is quite excited. they say there is more to come. they're building and talking about their ground game, grassroots, 4 million people have been contacted here in ohio alone. 4 1/2 million. that's more than a third of the overall population. the polls have ticked up. romney has closed the gap, leading in some of the national polls, within the mar i didn't know of error, and in most of the battle ground states, he's either closed the gap and in a couple of cases, gone up by a point or two. these are swings in the polls. he's eliminated any bounce the president had gotten from his convention with the own bounce he got last week. with the vice presidential debate this week and two more presidential debathes and generally both campaigns have recognized for the better part of the last year that this race was always going to hover at a close to even tie, 45-47 apiece and it will be decided probably in the last two weeks to ten days as that la
